Ford explorer sells over 100,000 units

How fast have been the sales of the fastest-growing midsize utility vehicle in America? Consider: The Ford Explorer recently saw calendar-year sales cross the six-figure mark for the first time since 2007—more than two months before the calendar year even ended.

The lineup includes the 2012 Ford Explorer, which is now on sale with an available EcoBoost engine that delivers best-in-class fuel economy. In fact, thanks to the use of turbocharging and other powertrain technologies, the advanced 2.0-liter I4 engine helps the Explorer achieve EPA ratings of 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. That’s without sacrificing power, too, because the same high-efficiency engine makes a robust 240 hp and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s a fair tradeoff, as is known by the folks at Cumming GA Ford.

“We know many consumers have a strong need for utility vehicles, even as rising gas prices made fuel efficiency one of their top concerns,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “Ford answered our customers’ needs in the utility segment by offering its all-new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine in the 2012 Ford Explorer and Edge.”

Other notable features offered by the Explorer:

Inflatable second-row seat belts—An industry first
SYNC with MyTouch Ford—The company’s ultimate in-car connectivity and infotainment system
Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System—With four selectable driving modes
Top safety ratings—Chosen as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
High levels of capability—With a max tow rating of 5,000 lbs.

“The Explorer continues to be one of the strongest vehicles in the Ford portfolio, and we are excited to see it surpass the 100,000-sales plateau,” said Amy Marentic, group marketing manager. “The success of this vehicle is further evidence we are delivering products that people want.”

2011 Ford Explorer selling well

Harris Ford loves the 2011 Ford Explorer. The new model has already sold 100,000 units this year, 290% of the previous models sales. The Explorer is now the fastest selling medium utility vehicle in the United States. The only other model in the series to reach this level of sales was the 2007 model.

This is despite the fact that critics aren’t big fans of the vehicle. The Explorer was ranked sixth by cars.com in a list of $37,000 SUVs. Consumer Reports wasn’t too happy with the Explorer either, placing it at 17th out of 19 utility vehicles.

The buyers, on the other hand seem to be very happy with the new Explorer. The Explorers 2 liter EcoBoost four cylinder model will have to wait until 2012 now.

According to research presented by Ford, up to 40 percent of all customers say they would walk right out of the dealership if they couldn’t find a vehicle in their preferred shade.

So Ford is about to add 3 new shades to its 2012 line-up.

The three latest Ford colors are

going to debut a few of Ford’s newest models:

Ginger Ale—(Named for its energy and refreshing qualities) has been selected to cover the all-new Ford Escape. This “classic gold neutral with slight green undertones” is typically found naturally in rocks, minerals and sandy beaches as well as jewelry, gems and textiles.
Kodiak Brown—A deep brown with warm highlights that is a current favorite of the fashion industry, Kodiak Brown was named after Alaska’s Kodiak bear for its “richness and strong presence.”
Frosted Glass—Also adopted from the world of haute couture, Frosted Glass will be the signature color of the Ford Focus Electric. The icy, light green shadehelps create a feeling of tranquility that reminds people of the ambiance of a spa or tropical waters, according to Ford.

2013 Ford Taurus with Ruby Red Tinted Clearcoat

There’s more to come, too, including a striking new Ruby Red Tinted Clearcoat that debuted on the 2013 Ford Taurus during its reveal at the New York Auto Show earlier this year.

“Color is a simple

way to allow people to add a personal touch to their lives,” said Swek. “It’s something that speaks to them and expresses a little bit of their personality.”

Popular Mechanics Honors Ford’s Inflatable Seat Belts

The rear inflatable seat belt, which is designed to reduce head, neck and chest injuries, earned the Breakthrough Technology Award as part of the magazine’s seventh annual Breakthrough Awards. Lead developer Srini Sundararajan will accept the award, but he’s quick to point out that it was a team effort. “Ford’s goal is to develop innovative safety technologies that give our customers more peace of mind, so it is a great honor to receive the Breakthrough Technology Award,” says Sundararajan, safety technical leader for Ford Research and Innovation.

Inflatable rear seat belts were introduced in the 2011 Explorer, and early figures showed about 40 percent of buyers are parents who are ordering the feature. Ford will introduce rear inflatable seat belts on more vehicles globally, but hasn’t said which ones will be next.
